Double Wishbone

Hey there guys, this time we are gonna talk about another famous type of suspension that we call double wishbone or sometimes as double A arm. It gets its name from the two control arm which looks kinda like wishbones.

It is basically an independent type of suspension design and it uses two wishbone shaped arms which are joined to the frame of the car and then there is a strut which control vertical movement.

The advantage it provides is with the camber angle and to provide a negative camber angle the upper arm is made shorter. Now this gives advantage when car is moving around a corner.

Suppose a car is moving around a corner, due to body roll the outer tire will have a positive camber gain if the each arm length is equal. But since the upper arm length is smaller than the lower what happens a negative camber gain is provided on the outer tires, so this let the tires to stick to the ground while turning. And with increased amount of body roll the camber gain also gets more negative and hence the car has always a great contact with ground.

It shows a great amount of deflection when hit by a jerk or bumps. It is versatile in nature this means that the spring and dampers are interchangeable or you can put them in any feasible manner as you wish.

It has certain disadvantages also, since it is made up of larger number of parts its cost is higher and is more complicated to assemble.

But apart from these few disadvantages it is one of the best suspension system present because of the large negative camber gain on body roll.
