five stroke engine

The time for a new internal combustion engine has come.
                                                                                 -Gerhard Schmitz

Why do we need a new type of engine? What's the problem in the existing four stroke type of engine?
The four stroke engine has higher fuel consumption rate but this five stroke engine gives a fuel consumption of 226 g/kWh. Above that the exhaust gases coming out of that are also less harmful.

In normal Otto or Diesel type engines. compression = expansion. But in five stroke engine compression= 8:1 and expansion= 1:15.

It basically works on the fact to harness energy from the exhaust gases. A five stroke engine developed by Ilmor has two small high pressure cylinder which works on 4 stroke principle and a large low pressure cylinder where the exhaust from the first two cylinders are passed on which perform further work. The five strokes are-
                                       1. Intake
                                       2. Compression
                                       3. Expansion
                                       4. Extended Expansion
                                       5. Exhaust

The fuel is burnt in the two high pressure cylinders and then the exhaust is passed on to the low pressure expander and this expander provides the extra work. This extra expansion reduces the fuel consumption level to 226 g/kWh (theoretically it is 204 g/kWh)
