Turbochargers basics

Turbochargers are used in the engine to boost its power. They are forced induction device and uses compressed air into the cylinder to boost the horsepower of engine.

In this we will deal with basics of turbochargers and in the upcoming blogs we will discuss on the wastegates, ceramic blades etc.

Turbochargers actually uses compresses air and gushes it into the engine cylinder. Compressed air helps to let more air into the cylinder and with more air more fuel can be added and thus more power can be obtained without significant increase in the weight in engine. This increases the power to weight ratio of the car.

In a turbocharger there are two turbine. One turbine is driven by the exhaust gases which is connected to the second turbine through a connecting rod. The second turbine intakes the fresh air and the air is finally passed on to the engine cylinder. This larger amount of air in the cylinder boosts the engine.
